B.S. in Medical Technology

The B.S. in Medical Technology program prepares students for careers in the health care field as clinical laboratory scientists. The program, requires 96 credits of coursework toward the St. Joseph’s College curriculum (which can include transfer credit) and one year of specialized didactic and clinical training in an approved hospital program. St. Joseph’s has an agreement with New York- Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program to provide this final year. The program at the School of Laboratory Science is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Students who complete the program receive a B.S. from St. Joseph’s College and a Certificate from the School of Clinical Laboratory Science. Graduates are eligible for licensure in New York State and may sit for the examination administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Students may plan to follow the Medical Technology program when they enter the College as freshmen. Others who begin as Biology majors may choose the Medical Technology degree program in sophomore or junior year. Careful planning is required to ensure that students complete all required courses, including the Core Curriculum, by the end of junior year. In order to be admitted to the New York - Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program for the final year of the program, students will be required to maintain grades of C or above for the course requirements at St. Joseph’s College, and must have completed the major, liberal arts and other requirements mandated by St. Joseph’s College and the New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program. - http://www.nypcls.org/

Applicants who are currently enrolled in their junior year of college (3+1):

Applicants must be enrolled in their junior year of college at St. Joseph’s College, on path to receive their bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Upon successful completion of their program, applicants in Pathway I will automatically be eligible to sit for the ASCP Examination.

A NOTE REGARDING NEW YORK STATE LICENSURE:

As of 2013, in order to qualify for licensure to work as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York, applicants must have received a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from a program registered for licensure with the New York State Department of Education Office of the Professions. Additionally, individuals must have completed coursework specifically in Analytical Chemistry or Biochemistry. New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is a NAACLS accredited program but is not a degree-granting institution. Therefore, NYPBMH does not directly qualify to register its program with the NYS Department of Education. However, students in the program are able to meet the necessary requirements through NYPBMH’s relationship with affiliated colleges, allowing them to complete the necessary coursework towards a certificate/degree at these institutions and to qualify for national certification, as well as New York State licensure.
